Free Nitrox in Phuket: How 32% Enriched Air Maximises Multi-Dive Days

Sea Fun Divers provides complimentary Enriched Air Nitrox (32% EANx) on all scheduled Phuket day boat trips for certified Nitrox divers. Diving 32% oxygen extends no-decompression limits on multi-dive days, reduces residual nitrogen loading across repetitive deep profiles, and shortens required surface intervals without extra tank surcharges.

Repetitive Nitrogen Penalties on Phuket Multi-Dive Itineraries

Phuket day boat charters operate on intensive multi-dive schedules. A typical day trip covers three distinct open-water immersions:

  • The Deep Wreck / Pinnacle Profile: King Cruiser Wreck (30–32 m), Shark Point (24 m), and Koh Doc Mai (28m).

  • The Southern Island Profile: Racha Yai and Racha Noi multi-drop drifts.

When breathing standard air (21% oxygen, 79% nitrogen), your body absorbs significant residual nitrogen during dive 1. On dive 2 and dive 3, this accumulated nitrogen drastically shrinks your allowable bottom time. Divers on standard air often find their dive computers approaching decompression limits within 15 to 20 minutes at moderate depths, forcing premature ascents to shallow depths while marine action remains below.

By lowering the nitrogen fraction from 79% to 68% with 32% Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx32), your tissues absorb nitrogen at a markedly slower rate. This provides substantial operational advantages:

  1. Extended Working Bottom Time: Up to 50% more no-decompression time on repetitive drops.
  2. Safer Conservative Margins: Diving a Nitrox mix while setting your dive computer to standard air provides a massive safety buffer against decompression sickness (DCS).
  3. Reduced Post-Dive Exhaustion: Divers consistently report lower physical fatigue at the end of a 3-dive day due to lower inert gas microbubble loads.

Commercial Surcharge Elimination: The Sea Fun Divers Advantage

Across Phuket and Chalong Pier, the industry-standard fee for Nitrox is an added surcharge of 250 THB to 350 THB per cylinder. On a standard 3-dive trip, this adds 750 THB to 1,050 THB per day on top of the base trip price.

Sea Fun Divers includes 32% Enriched Air Nitrox completely free of charge for all certified Nitrox divers on every scheduled day boat trip.

  • Trips Covered: All Monday through Sunday schedules departing from Chalong Marina.

  • Boat Layout: Our custom-built dive vessel is capped strictly at 20 divers, eliminating the chaotic cylinder confusion common on 60-diver commercial boats.

  • Guide Standard: Private, unhurried dive tour in small teams with a strict 4:1 diver-to-guide ratio.

Bottom Time Comparison: Air (21%) vs. Enriched Air (32%)

The table below illustrates the dramatic difference in No-Decompression Limits (NDL) for a first dive based on standard PADI/DSAT recreational dive models.

At 24 meters—the prime depth for observing leopard sharks at Shark Point or cruising the car deck of the King Cruiser—32% Nitrox delivers 15 additional minutes of no-decompression time on your first immersion alone. On dives 2 and 3, where residual nitrogen cuts air limits in half, EANx32 preserves full exploratory profiles.

Operational Gas Analysis and Logging Protocols

Safety on enriched air requires systematic verification. At Sea Fun Divers, gas blending and cylinder tracking adhere to stringent PADI 5-Star CDC standards.

StepOperational Protocol
Step 1: CalibrateCalibrate digital O₂ analyser to 20.9% in ambient air.
Step 2: AnalyseFlow gas at a moderate, steady rate until reading stabilizes.
Step 3: CalculateVerify Maximum Operating Depth: 33.8 m at 1.4 PO2.
Step 4: Log & TagSign the boat gas logbook and complete the visual cylinder label.
  • Personal Diver Analysis: Regulations and dive safety standards require every diver to personally analyse their own gas cylinders before departure.

  • Analyser Calibration: Calibrate the digital oxygen analyser to ambient atmospheric air (20.9% O₂) in a shaded, well-ventilated area on the dive deck.

  • Flow Measurement: Crack the tank valve gently and hold the analyser sensor against the valve orifice until the readout stabilises (target: 32% ± 1%).

  • MOD Verification: Compute and verify the Maximum Operating Depth (MOD):

    • At a recreational partial pressure of oxygen of 1.4 bar, the MOD for 32% Nitrox is strictly 33.8 meters (111 feet).

  • Cylinder Tagging & Boat Log Sign-off: Write the exact oxygen percentage, MOD, date, and your signature onto the cylinder visual inspection band, then enter the verification into the official Sea Fun Divers boat manifest log.

Wreck dive on King Cruiser Phuket

The King Cruiser Wreck is an 85-meter catamaran passenger ferry resting upright between 18 and 32 meters deep, 26 km east of Chalong Pier, Phuket. Due to open-ocean depths, strong seasonal currents, and structural degradation, the site strictly requires a minimum of PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or Adventure Deep training under direct instructor supervision). Sea Fun Divers visits the King Cruiser every Monday and Thursday as Dive 1 on our 20-diver custom vessel with a 4:1 guide ratio and free 32% Nitrox.

Essential Dive Site Specifications & Marine Conditions

Sunk on May 4, 1997, after striking nearby Anemone Reef, the King Cruiser now acts as one of the Andaman Sea’s richest artificial reefs. Over the past three decades, monsoonal sea surges have collapsed the upper wheelhouse and passenger decks directly into the car hold, altering navigation strategies.

ParameterTechnical SpecificationOperational Safety Protocol
Depth Profile18 m (deck wreckage) to 32 m (sand bottom)Conducted strictly as Dive 1 of a 3-dive day to maximize allowable No-Decompression Limits (NDL).
Prerequisite CertificationPADI Advanced Open Water (or Deep Specialty)Open Water divers may only dive this site while completing an Adventure Deep course dive with a PADI Instructor.
Current ConditionsModerate to Strong (1.0 to 2.5 knots)Direct negative descent down the stern mooring line to prevent drift separation.
Average Visibility8 m to 20 mNutrient-rich waters cause periodic green thermoclines that attract dense pelagic baitfish.
Water Temperature28°C to 30°C year-roundFull 3 mm wetsuit recommended for thermal balance and protection against encrusted metal.
Wreck PenetrationStrictly ProhibitedCompromised steel ribs and collapsed ceilings present serious entrapment hazards; exterior profile only.

Navigating the Hull: Stern, Midships & Bow Profile

At 85 meters long and 25 meters wide, attempting to swim around the entire perimeter of the King Cruiser in a single dive burns gas quickly in a current. Your guide leads a strategic multi-level profile:

Surface to 18m
Mooring Line Descent
Negative entry directly to stern leeward side; eliminates surface drift separation
↓
Collapsed Wheelhouse & Twin Funnels 18 Meters
Marine Highlights: Swirling schools of bigeye trevally and hunting lionfish hovering above machinery.
Upper Passenger Deck Ruins 22m – 25 Meters
Marine Highlights: Primary feeding zone for resident hawksbill sea turtles grazing on encrusted soft corals.
Vehicle Hold & Heavy Machinery 28m – 30 Meters
Marine Highlights: Heavily encrusted steel beams sheltering masterfully camouflaged bearded scorpionfish.
Sea Floor & Twin Propellers 32 Meters
Marine Highlights: Brown-banded bamboo sharks and blue-spotted stingrays resting on the sand beneath the stern shaft.

Descent and Mooring Line Protocol

Surface currents at this open-water site can pull divers off the wreck before they reach depth. Sea Fun Divers executes a direct negative descent on the stern mooring line. Divers vent their BCDs at the surface, meet the guide on the line, and pull down directly to 18 meters, sheltered on the leeward side of the stern.

Multi-Level Exploration

  • The Stern (18 m to 24 m): Twin engine exhaust funnels and vehicle loading ramps are smothered in soft corals. Lionfish hover around the machinery in large groups.

  • Midships & Collapsed Decks (22 m to 26 m): The passenger salon has pancaked downward, creating sheltered alcoves. Resident hawksbill turtles graze on the encrusted sponges here, undisturbed by divers.

  • The Bow (20 m to 30 m): Pointing north, the bow cuts into the prevailing flow. Massive schools of yellowtail barracuda and bigeye trevally hover off the tip, facing into the current.

Gas Management & SMB Drift Ascent

  1. Because bottom time at 25–30 meters ticks down rapidly, divers must follow a strict gas plan:
  2. Turn the dive when any buddy reaches 70 bar or 5 minutes remaining NDL.
  3. Work upward along the deck structures to 14–16 meters to slow nitrogen absorption.
  4. Move away from the windward steel hull into the open blue water.
  5. Your guide deploys a high-visibility Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) for a mid-water safety stop at 5 meters.
  6. Our custom boat tracks the SMB and retrieves the 4-diver team directly upon surfacing.

Marine Life Profile: Predator Aggregations & Benthic Camouflage

The metal structure of the King Cruiser functions as an oasis in an otherwise featureless, open sandy channel:

  • Hunting Pelagics: Great barracudas, giant trevallies, and Spanish mackerel circle the outer perimeter of the wreck, driving schools of silver sides into defensive bait balls.

  • Benthic Camouflage Hazards: The rusted steel plating is coated in algae, hydroids, and stinging hydroids. Bearded scorpionfish, stonefish, and devil scorpionfish blend into the metal. Divers must maintain strict neutral buoyancy—never grip or touch any surface of the wreck.

  • Sheltered Sand Dwellers: Beneath the stern propeller shafts at 32 meters, brown-banded bamboo sharks and blue-spotted stingrays rest on the sandy bottom.

The Nitrox 32% Advantage on Deep Wrecks

Diving the King Cruiser on standard air (21% O2) limits your exploration time significantly:

Sea Fun Divers provides Free Nitrox 32% on all day trips for certified Enriched Air divers. Since King Cruiser is followed by a drift dive at Shark Point and a wall dive at Koh Doc Mai, breathing Nitrox on Dive 1 significantly lowers residual nitrogen buildup throughout your day.

Why Boat Diver Capacity Dictates Safety: The 20-Diver Advantage in Phuket

Sea Fun Divers diving day trip boat in Phuket

Boat diver capacity directly dictates safety, emergency response speed, and underwater experience on Phuket scuba day trips. While standard commercial dive boats out of Chalong Pier carry 50 to 60 divers, Sea Fun Divers caps capacity at 20 divers, maintaining a 4:1 diver-to-guide ratio. This ensures spacious kitting up, dedicated camera rinse stations, uncrowded giant-stride entries, and uncompromised surface interval supervision across all 2-dive and 3-dive daily itineraries.

The Operational Reality of Phuket Scuba Boats

Chalong Pier is the central departure marina for scuba diving trips across the Andaman Sea. On peak mornings, large 30-meter commercial dive vessels board 50 to 70 passengers, including technical divers, beginner students, Discover Scuba first-timers, and snorkelers, all on a single deck.

While large vessels handle open-ocean swells well, high passenger volume creates significant operational and safety friction:

  • Pre-Dive Deck Congestion: When 50+ divers attempt to kit up simultaneously before arriving at Shark Point or the King Cruiser Wreck, dive benches become crowded with cylinders, weight belts, and long hoses.

  • Delayed Drift Retrievals: In dynamic open-water drift sites with shifting currents, picking up 12 to 15 different surfacing buddy teams scattered across open ocean leads to extended surface wait times.

  • Diluted Guide Attention: Overcrowded dive decks make thorough pre-dive safety briefings and buddy checks difficult for guides and boat masters to verify.

Sea Fun Divers eliminates this congestion by operating a custom vessel strictly limited to 20 divers.

20-Diver Custom Vessel vs. 60-Diver Commercial Day Boat

Choosing between a private-capacity dive craft and a mass-market day boat fundamentally changes your dive day. On massive commercial vessels, diver logistics operate like an assembly line: buddy teams queue in cramped aisles, wait for open spaces on the stern platform, and compete for shaded saloon seats during surface intervals.

By contrast, an operation purpose-built around 20 divers prioritises deck workflow, personalised gas management, and immediate surface retrieval. The operational differences directly impact dive quality and safety margins:

Safety Protocol: How Deck Space Prevents Pre-Dive Incidents

The majority of dive accidents do not start underwater—they originate on the surface from task overload, physical exhaustion, and hurried preparations.

Avoiding Heat Exhaustion and Gearing-Up Stress

In tropical ambient temperatures of 31°C to 33°C, donning a wetsuit and strapping on heavy gear while waiting in a crowded line causes rapid diver dehydration and an elevated resting heart rate.

  • On our 20-diver deck, each diver remains comfortably seated at their dedicated station until the boat reaches the drop zone.

  • Guides conduct thorough BWRAF (BCD, Weights, Releases, Air, Final Check) buddy checks without being rushed by competing dive operations on the same deck.

Rapid Negative Entries on Open-Sea Sites

Sites like Shark Point (Hin Musang) and King Cruiser Wreck feature unpredictable surface currents.

  • Boarding a small group of 20 divers allows the captain to position precisely over the shot line.

  • Divers enter cleanly via spacious entry gates and descend immediately as a cohesive unit, eliminating surface separation.

A leopard shark swimming over the reef near Phuket

Shark Point (Hin Musang) is an official Marine Sanctuary located 25 km east of Chalong Pier, Phuket. The site features three submerged limestone pinnacles ranging from 10 to 24 meters in depth. Rated for Open Water divers and above, it is renowned for resident Indo-Pacific leopard sharks (zebra sharks) resting on sandy bottoms, dense purple and pink soft corals, and schooling trevally. Moderate-to-strong currents make it a premier drift dive. Sea Fun Divers runs day trips to Shark Point every Monday and Thursday with a strict 4:1 diver-to-guide ratio, a capped 20-diver boat capacity, and Free Nitrox 32% for enriched-air certified divers.

Essential Dive Site Specifications & Marine Conditions

Shark Point is officially designated as a Marine Sanctuary by the Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. The site consists of three main pinnacles running north-to-south, labeled Pinnacle 1 (the only rock breaking the surface with a navigational beacon), Pinnacle 2, and Pinnacle 3.

Marine Life Profile: Where to Find Leopard Sharks & Macro Critters

The sanctuary’s Thai name, Hin Musang, translates directly to “Shark Rock,” named after the docile Indo-Pacific leopard sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum) that frequent the area.

Leopard Sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum)

  • Location: The sandy bottom surrounding Pinnacle 1 and the channel between Pinnacles 1 and 2 (18 m to 24 m).

  • Behaviour: Leopard sharks are nocturnal hunters. During daylight hours, they rest quietly on the sand, facing into the current to aerate their gills.

  • Diver Protocol: Approach slowly from the side at eye level. Never hover directly over a resting shark, block its swimming path, or attempt physical contact. A startled shark will flush into the blue, ending the encounter for your team.

Soft Coral Forests & Pelagic Schools

  • Pinnacle 1: The eastern and southern slopes are smothered in vibrant pink and purple dendronephthya soft corals, sea whips, and massive sea fans.

  • Reef Residents: Dense shoals of yellowtail snapper, chevron barracuda, and blue-dash fusiliers surround the pinnacle crest. Look inside gorgonian fans for juvenile tiger-tail seahorses and ornate ghost pipefish.

  • Pinnacle 2 & 3: Large barrel sponges, green sea turtles feeding on anemone carpets, and banded sea kraits hunting through coral crevices.

Navigating the 3 Pinnacles: Drift Strategy & Current Management

Tides in the Andaman Sea drive distinct water movement across Shark Point. Sea Fun Divers guides assess the surface and mid-water currents before every entry to determine the drift trajectory.

  1. Pinnacle 1 (The Beacon): Most dives begin here. Use the mooring line for a direct negative descent to beat surface drift. Work along the sheltered leeward wall. In mild currents, divers can circumnavigate the pinnacle at 18 m, spiralling upward to 10 m.
  2. The Crossing (Pinnacle 1 to Pinnacle 2): Only attempted when currents are light to moderate. Your guide will signal the transition across a 20-meter sandy expanse. Stay close to your guide within our 4:1 group formation to cross efficiently.
  3. Pinnacle 3: Fully submerged at 15 meters, Pinnacle 3 requires favourable tides, good gas consumption, and an Advanced Open Water certification.
  4. Ascent & Safety Stop: Never attempt to swim back into a head current to reach the mooring line. When gas reaches 50 bar, your guide deploys a Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) from the leeward wall for a blue-water safety stop at 5 meters. Our boat tracks the SMB for pickup.
